The Making of the Modern Philippines by Vincente L. Rafael. The origins of the modern Philippine nation-state can be traced to the overlapping histories of three empires: Spain, the United States, China and Japan. This background makes the Philippines a center of multiple cultures. Like all nation-states, it is a part of a global order governed by a set of shifting power relationships.
